Abstract
In ontological practice any patient with a detectable hearing impairment may be described as being deaf. In this paper, the etiology of deafness is reviewed and summarized as follows: 1 , Congenital deafness
A. Hereditary
1. True mendelian(dorninant, recessive)
2. Erythroblastosis fetalis
3. Secondary to other hereditary traits
B. Malformations of the external, middle or internal ear
C. Occurrences to the mother during pregnancy
1. Rubella or other virus diseases
2. Toxic poisoning (quinine, salicylates, alcohol, etc.)
D. Intrauterine accidents and birth injuries
Q , Acquired deafness
A. Disorders of the external auditory canal
1. Impacted cerumen
2. Foreign body impacted in the external auditory canal
3. External otitis
4. Osteomas or other tumors
5. Acquired deformities
B. Disorders of the middle ear
1. Serous otitis media
2. Aero-otitis media
3. Acute otitis media
4. Chronic otitis media
5. Chronic adhesions; perforation
6. Tubal occlusions(tubal swelling, closed bite, endocrine disorders, tonsils and adenoid, peritubal lymphoid tissue hypertrophy, tumors)
C. Disorders of the inner ear
1. Disturbance of conduction by perilymph and endolymph
2. Disturbance of the end organ (Corti¢¥s organ)
3. Nerve or spiral ganglion degeneration (toxic, avitaminotic)
D. Disorders of cerebrum
E. Psychogenic deafness
